Without consulting any sort of reference, what does gird your loins mean?

Literally, I think it involves putting on armor; colloquially, preparing for a battle. I think.

I'm thinking "cover your nuts", but that would be gird your scrotum, which doesn't quite fit.

I might just say it's an anticipatory "protect yourself!"

Strictly, to put on a belt, but metaphorically, to get ready for battle.

I always assumed it meant to put on the Brass Diaper Of Testicle Protection.

I've always understood the 'loins' to be the part of the anatomy involved with reproduction, so 'girding' them would be protecting them in some way, by way of a cup more modernly, or armor in an early reference.

So basically it would mean, cover your triangularly sensitive area (since there are both male and female soldier-types).

My without thinking response was, "prepare for battle", and my consider it more carefully answer was, "it probably derives from protecting one's jewels prior to joining the fight".

I thought it meant tighten your belt, commonly used when preparing for a battle, or prior to attempting a strenuous or difficult task.

Hm. Lots of people here who think that 'loins' refers to the genitals.

To those people, I say, "Go to your butcher shop and look at the chart that shows what a beef or pork loin is."

I always thought it meant to tighten your armor, which in ancient days had straps running around your upper thighs. But I fully recognize that I have no idea.

Girding your Loins I think is Roman (I want to say for wrestlers), where they would wear heavy leather belts to protect the kidneys. So the metaphor got extended into generic struggle/battle with something.

And please no one girds their loins, they strap on their hobnails.
