As I write this, I'm sitting next to my bed watching the mattress fill. Yay! If all goes well, I get to sleep in my own bed tonight for the first time in a whole week. My couch is perfectly lovely and surprisingly comfortable to sleep on, but I really rather prefer my bed.

I took advantage of the bed's disassembly to add attachment points all around the outside. The design is simple-- 3/4" plywood that's exactly the same size as the mattress, with pad eyes all around the perimeter. They hide nicely under the mattress when they aren't in use, and each one is rated for 800# of load. I think that should be sufficient, ya think?

Aah, the bed finished filling while I was typing this. Now begins the laborious process of getting the air bubbles out. Envy me!

Is there any sort of barrier between those and the mattress? I'd worry about them digging a hole.

Yep. It's a softside mattress, and they're at the outside edge of the foam frame, a few inches away from any actual water.

The best thing I've found for dealing with the bubble hunt is something which is long enough to go across the width of the bed, and then you can just angle it a little bit and push all the bubbles to the fillpipe. For my bed, which is of the big bag inside of a wooden box sort, it works like a charm as the bed is slightly higher than the box.

Am I understanding correctly that your waterbed bag isn't in a wooden box, but is inside of a slightly larger mattress which can then be on a platform with no box around the sides?

You're exactly right. Google "soft side waterbed".

Imagine a normal-looking mattress that unzips around the outside. On the inside is a heavy foam frame with a liner that goes over it, and a waterbed mattress that sits inside the frame.
