A friend of mine sent me a link to this story in ValleyWag about Six Apart. They're my former employers, and owners of LiveJournal.

I love this rebuttal, especially Anil's quote near the end. "Everybody that's ever left the company, we're still on really good terms with." I think Anil may have done a bit of adventuring with the facts when he said that... I'd bet that among the many people who have left 6A, at least one or two are on less than "really good terms" with them.

The whole thing has given me a good laugh, even though the ValleyWag story is probably at least partially off-base.

Yeah I just heard about all that. Pretty sad that someone would do that. :/

Drop me a note on nick.denton@gmail.com. If we're offbase, particularly with the speculation on who did it, would love to know in what way...

The person who wrote the news.com article is my friend (from high school!). Originally she asked me if I knew anything about the "scandal", and I had no idea what she was even talking about, heh. I guess I'm not in on the gossip! But she was happy that she was able to get some information from people at 6A about the whole thing. :)

Aha! I figured there was an insider connection of some sort... it happened to fast to be random.

"at least one or two are on less than 'really good terms' with them"

Yeah, I didn't mean to suggest that 100% of every interaction is all hugs and kisses, but just that overall, I just don't think there's anybody who's ever worked with us who's thinking "OMG I WANT TO POST BRAD'S SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ONLINE". I'm realizing more and more that news/journalism/gossip is a game of people talking to each other, which means miscommunications, fuzzy details, and confusion a lot of the time.

I am surprised to hear you say the whole thing's given you a good laugh -- most of the people who've had to deal with the grief of potential identity theft here are innocent bystanders. But I can see that some distance can make this stuff seem more like idle entertainment.

I'm certainly capable of feeling sympathy and empathy for the innocent victims while at the same time enjoying the schadenfreude of watching a small soap opera play out. (Almost) all humor in this world is at the expense of someone else, but that doesn't mean that nothing is ever funny.

I agree and understand where you're coming from here, and I've got a pretty dark sense of humor most of the time myself. I just have a conection in this case to some people I care about.

Right. It's often less funny when it's you and yours, and I understand why you'd be both sensitive and upset about it.

Personally, I don't find the data leak terribly funny. The rest of it? Well, I think a song says it best.

Oh, and clearly there's at least one person in the world who was thinking "OMG I WANT TO POST BRAD'S SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ONLINE", though my gut says the odds that it was done by an ex-employee are rather small. It smells more like hax0rz to me.

Yeah, I didn't mean to suggest that 100% of every interaction is all hugs and kisses,

Given the romantic triangle, that's an unfortunate choice of phrase.
