The office I work in has lots of hard-walled offices with doors around the perimeter, and open space in the middle that is filled cubicles. The cubicles are surprisingly nice-- they're Herman Miller with high outside walls, sliding whiteboards, sliding windows between cubes, and organizing shelves. Most importantly, they have full-height doors that slide closed.

The people in offices almost always leave their doors open unless there's a meeting going on.

The cubicle dwellers almost always close their doors whenever they're at their desks.

I wonder why that is?

I'm betting it's almost entirely dependent upon which direction one's monitor faces, relative to the doors.

One's back to the door while focused on something is not a comfort zone for most people.

That's what I was thinking.

That's why I reconstruct my cubes to move the desk to face the "incoming" position. I often wish I had a door though because I get neck deep in something complicated and someone always comes by and derails me.

An office with the door open is still fairly private and quiet. Does the cube door provide a little extra privacy and a little less noise?
Other than that, the answer on why cube dwellers close their doors is the age old "because they can".

Be thankful for whatever you have...I only have two walls.
