Harry Potter Spoiler: It was Colonel Mustard, in the library, with a broom.
I thought it was a reasonably good book, but it's also the first book where I got annoyed at the storytelling.
The problem with creating a magical world is that it's too easy to rely on dei ex machina when things get tough. Actually, I think it's worse than that-- it's difficult not to have things look like dei ex machina. This was the first book where I really noticed the pattern of, "Bad situation, hopeless situation, oh look here comes something unexpected and magical to save the day." Oh, sure, it happened in all of them but this was the first one that left me thinking, "Nah, too easy."
I was particularly displeased by a bit involving a lake.
