Subject:Burning down the man
Time:01:04 am
As you've probably heard by now, The Man at Burning Man got torched a couple of days early by a prankster/troublemaker/brilliant satirist/jackass. I've been having quite a discussion with a friend of mine-- he and I disagree profoundly about this particular event.

Please choose as many options as make sense for you, e.g. it's OK to think it was both hilarious and unacceptable.

You left out "ironic". I find it quite ironic that he was arrested for burning the man at Burning Man.

Man, I wish I were on the playa right now. Next year!

Oh, I also wanted to note that your poll results will be skewed due to the timing - most of the people who know a lot about Burning Man are AT Burning Man and not reading blogs this weekend. For instance, it absolutely was a very dangerous stunt - no security to keep people at a safe distance while the man burned. But if you haven't been at a burn you wouldn't know just how dangerous this is. Being AT the burn is nothing like looking at photos or video or hearing about it from someone who was there. Only if you were AT a burn would you likely grok just how dangerous this was.

Nah, not terribly skewed. Very few of my friends are burners.

Actually, having been at a burn, I don't think it was necessarily as dangerous as you say (however, not having been at THIS burn, I can't say for certain). The Man's way the hell out in the desert, and I think most people (barring those extremely messed up) would notice if he caught fire in a significant way and would get the hell out of there.

The big ethic at Burning Man is "Safety Third," and as such, everybody has a pretty good awareness of their state of safety, because nobody else is looking out for them. It's so dangerous to be at BM in the first place, an extra unplanned flaming thing is just the cherry on top of the cupcake, so to speak.

Yeah,

I'd phrase it as "deliciously ironic" but some sort of irony definitely.

One of my real issues with the burning man crowd, as I've interacted with them, is that they want to be alternative as long as it's on the socially-approved alternatives list. I'm laughing my ass off at the idea that a bunch of people who claim to be into guerilla art got bent out of shape at someone's guerilla art.

And of course it's not radio buttons. The poll stemmed out of a discussion I had with someone else, wherein I claimed it was possible to believe that it was wrong and yet still funny as all hell.

yeah. i'd say "wrong yet funny"

i admit that i'd be more down on it if the guy wasn't a long-time burner. i think that makes it more likely to be art than vandalism.

Actually, of the people I talked to on the playa Tuesday morning about it, 75% seemed to be glad to have things shaken up a bit. The concerns I heard were about safety.

It was fairly clear all week that the act wasn't a prank, but rather commentary about the (hypocritical) political theme and a criticism of the direction of the board of directors. Several long time burners I spoke with said they didn't plan to return next year if the theme was political, and "American Dream" seems quite so. There was an unofficial monkey theme this year, taken on by those who disliked the green man.
