The "country breakfast bomb," as she called it, represents half a day's calories and a full day's worth of saturated fat and salt, to say nothing of cholesterol.

From a St. Louis-based chain. There's a shocker.

In 2003 the chain introduced a line of big sandwiches, including the Monster Thickburger. The 1,420-calorie sandwich is made up of two 1/3-pound slabs of beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese and mayonnaise on a buttered bun.

My triglycerides were high a month and a half ago, and rather than medicate, I took more holistic action. I got my diet under control. At 227, I was probably 30lbs higher than is healthy. So, a little internet reckoning told me my daily caloric requirement was about 2600 cals a day, so I put myself on a 2100 cal a day diet. That is the long winded preamble to not being astonished by this. I eat 500 cals in the morning period, 800 in the lunch period, and 800 in the dinner period. If I eat a typical 1/2 sandwich at Panera, I'm clocking in 450 cals, plus 100 cals in the lowfat chix soup, and 150 cals in the chips. I drink iced tea with splenda (I actually skip the chips, and some of the soup). I could kill 1200 cals without blinking an eye at the Denny's on the strip, for example. Hell, I could probably kill 1800 cals at 2a.

The chicken burrito ultimo at Baja Fresh is about 1k calories in its own right. Very hard to eat in healthy proportions when you are dining out.

OK, last rant. So we decided to have salmon two weeks ago. My wife bought the wild caught Atlantic at 2x the farm raised (I usually hate salmon), and lo and behold it wasn't some slimy pink mess. It was tender and flaky, moist without being gooey. I can see why poor people eat badly. It's expensive to eat well. /rant

An ex used to get CSPI's newsletter, but it was such food porn that she would wind up craving whatever obscenity was documented in the latest issue, and go out and buy it.
