Security:
Subject:Whoops!
Time:07:04 am
I just tried to take a knife through airport security. On the trip out, they searched and searched my purse after x-raying it twice, then concluded it was a USB thumb drive. PDX found it.

Luckily, they have "mail it to yourself" kiosks handy. P, it was the pink one you gave me for christmas. I would have been sad to lose it.

And I feel like an idiot.

You're lucky they didn't confiscate it in accordance with the new Homeland Security edicts.

Wasn't aware of this. Truly amazing.

Part that made me laugh:

At a Senate hearing in June, Larry Cunningham, a New York prosecutor who is now a law professor, defended laptop searches--but not necessarily seizures--as perfectly permissible. Preventing customs agents from searching laptops "would open a vulnerability in our border by providing criminals and terrorists with a means to smuggle child pornography or other dangerous and illegal computer files into the country," Cunningham said.

Yep, that would be the best way to smuggle files into the country. No other way it could be done.

you totally picked the right day for it, too.

i got busted going thru boston logan on an international flight with a frickin boxcutter. (really, what could happen on a long-haul flight out of logan with a boxcutter!)

i thought i had searched all the pockets on my bag, but i'd missed one. i went into instant grovelling mode when they found it and explained repeatedly that it's a tool -- i work with tools -- i'm going to do work at a remote office -- oh god i'm so sorry can i possibly be more submissive...

what's hilarious is that while bored in my hotel room overseas, i went thru all my pockets on all my carryon luggage very carefully and found at least two other small knives.

oh, and then one time going to barge, i realized as i was having dinner before going thru security that i'd forgotten a knife in a pocket of my bag. i begged a couple of envelopes from the ticket counter, packed up the knife, bought postage, and mailed it to myself at home with a return address of "rmd is a total idiot"

One of the Dudes flew from Sacramento to Orange County with his set of throwing knives in his backpack. Weirdly, security in Sacto didn't pick it up, but the *outgoing* security did (I gather that the folks in Sac got in more trouble than he did).

Yeah, I lost a favorite multi-tool that way. Stupid me. *sigh*

Glad you didn't lose yours.
