My computer is running out of gofast, so it's time for a new motherboard. I'm contemplating:

Intel i7 920
Asus P6T6 motherboard

As far as I can tell, the price break between the 920, 940, and 965 probably make the lower-end chip a better choice. Yes? Is it worth spending the extra money? Is there something I should be looking at instead? (No, a Mac is not on the agenda for a lot of reasons.)

I am definitely in the buy middle end chips camp. The premium for high end chips just isn't worth it. It'll buy you an extra three months of computer lifetime or something.

I personally have had an eye on the i7 line, and the 920 seems to be the sweet spot in terms of price and performance. I think it falls in the high middle end for dmorr's objections.

Personally, I've been specing out Dell's machines for this - looks to be about a $1k expenditure to get a machine fixed up the way I want it.

(I have built my own box by hand before, but Dell saves the time and the frustration, roughly the same cost by my figuring.)
