Subject:Portion-size inflation in a nutshell
Time:10:06 pm
I've ranted a fair bit in the past about portion sizes in America, and how they've inflated over the years so that now people think ridiculously-large meals are perfectly normal. I had a great example of it tonight at Arby's when I heard this conversation:
Customer (staring at menu): Do you still have the Giant?
Cashier: It's now the medium
Customer: Ah, OK. (Stares at menu some more.) I'll have a large roast beef.
Both sides of the conversation had a beautiful yet horrifying irony.

There's an Arby's in San Leandro on East 14th Street -- just off 580, north of Bayfair Mall. And they serve Diet Dr. Pepper on tap.

As fast food goes, it's fairly high on my list. I prefer Lion's Choice, but they only exist in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.

There's one on El Camino in South San Francisco.

So do they have a new Giant?

I can't imagine who would order the Giant these days. I used to eat two of 'em when I was 17, and figure that one Medium is about all I could handle by now.

Especially because Medium is the old Giant?

Because of that. I still have a fairly large appetite as far as normal people go, but it doesn't compare to the near-psychotic famished state of growing teenagers.

I dunno if this is actually an example of portion size inflation, vs a shift in consumer preference from multiple smaller sandwiches to a single larger sandwich. I don't see as many small sandwiches at fast food places as I used to, but I also don't see as many advertised specials that involve more than one sandwich.

"The Giant is now the Medium...."

I'm envisioning this seven-foot-tall dude looking not quite comfortable yet in his black cape and turban while holding a crystal ball.

OK - I haven't got past the fact that Arby's has employees that have been there long enough to remember the Giant...

We've made it almost halfway to the average Hungarian portion.
