It seems that OKCupid has a new toy, wherein they tell you what states and countries you have the best and worst matches in. I wasn't the least bit surprised by my state results:

Worst:

Arkansas -- 64.3
Mississippi -- 64.8
Alabama -- 65.1
Wyoming -- 65.4
Tennessee -- 65.6

Best:

Massachusetts -- 74.9
Vermont -- 74.4
Oregon -- 74.2
Washington -- 73.1
Maryland -- 72.9

It seems I don't get along all that well with the south. Go figure. The countries were a little bit more surprising:

Worst:

Pakistan -- 48.6
Saudi Arabia -- 49.8
Egypt -- 50.6
Kenya -- 51.8
Indonesia -- 55.0

Best:

Switzerland -- 78.8
Austria -- 78.5
Israel -- 78.0
Sweden -- 77.5
Iceland -- 77.3

Israel? ISRAEL?! Umm, no.

What's wrong with Israel? I've been there...twice. Beautiful people, beautiful country, tasty food.

I suspect she is entangling Israeli politics with the Israeli people.

But I'm curious as well.

Or the religious zealots with the non-religious establishment?

I've been trying to find a way to put a vague notion into words.

I don't think I have a lot in common with people who would choose to live in a country that is to fundamentally married to a religion.

And yes, to some extent I'm mixing the politics of the country with the citizenry.

At this point most of them were born there, or fled places like the Soviet Union. I don't think 'choice' is quite the appropriate word anymore (as in US or Israel?)

And I'm going to guess (without first verifying) that the percentage of atheists in Israel is far higher than that in the US.

Yup, almost certainly.

"According to a 2004 Israel Central Bureau of Statistics Study on Israelis aged over 18 ... 43% are "secular". Among the seculars, 53% say they believe in God."

I'm a bit more surprised at Austria vs, say, Denmark or the Netherlands.

Yep, I am also wondering about Austria. They have some nasty right wingers, but have had their multi cultural history.

The numbers on worst states vs. best states don't seem *that* too far apart compared to best and worst for countries.

Israel surprises me too, whether it be the people or the politics. I just don't see it fitting you as a best match vs all of the other possible countries!

What kind of questions are they posing that yield these results? Is it just the stuff that comes from the profile questions?

OKC has about a zillion random questions that you can answer, and also denote how important someone else's answers are to you. They're all over the map in terms of content and subject matter.

OK, I found global matches. Where do you find the best and worst stats?

No clue. They sent it to me via email.

On first glance those country results seem to be well correlated to female literacy rates.

But upon further consideration the best correlation is to those countries with the highest rates of long, purple-red hair.

What, do Sweden and Iceland get extra points for aurora borealis?

After glancing some more, the worst states' results seem to also be well correlated to the state's Average IQ. =x

I'm amused that "California" isn't in the best states list, and that the "United States of America" isn't in the best countries list. ;-)

I grew up in Wyoming. I don't recall meeting anyone with your hair color. As far as Mississippi (and a lot of other southern states go), you'd faint at the lack of portion control in restaurants.

I'm not sure it's available on their site-- I looked around and didn't see it.
