Subject:What is sex?

Apropos of my recent poll, people can't agree on what 'having sex' is.

"Though 95% said penile-vaginal intercourse was having sex..."

And the other 5% don't speak English?

11% says it doesn't count it if the guy doesn't come. That's an important bit. :P

Yeah, that was my favorite bit.

I saw another one recently that showed that more men could find the clitoris than women.

That actually doesn't surprise me at all. Women don't look at their cunts. Men, hopefully, spend a lot of time looking at cunts. :)

99% of surveys are flawed, and this article is a perfect illustration of why. I'm betting that the survey instrument (survey questions) was vague enough that a gay man might reasonably say "no" to a question like "do you consider penile/vaginal intercourse to be sex?" because, for *him* that isn't what HE considers sex.

Add in some teenage justifying (I'm not a virgin because he didn't come, etc.) and you get the wonky results the article reported.

The other 5% don't know what a penis or vagina are.

That's a big part of my teachings about poly these days. When the boundaries of "sex" are as uncertain as they are, everybody is to some degree polyamorous -- or, at least, nobody gets to pretend that a pledge of "monogamy" settles everything.

Back when I was doing a lot of radio interviews on "Ethical Slut," I repeated variations on this conversation more times than I can count:

DJ: "So, Ms. Liszt -- exactly how many people *have* you had sex with?"

Me: "I'll tell you what. You tell me your definition of sex, and I'll tell you how many people I've had it with."

DJ: "Well... uh... I mean... well... you know... SEX."

Me: [off into teaching point, taking advantage of DJ's confoundment.}

That stuff never gets old.

Greta Christina wrote a great essay about this question.
