Subject:Laser printer recommendations?
Time:12:01 pm
Last night my 17-year-old laser printer decided to make a horrible gears-slipping racket at an inopportune time. (That would be 2 a.m.) It's been quite the workhorse, obviously. I could probably fix it, but since it's nearly old enough to vote that hardly seems worthwhile.

It's time for a replacement. I don't really need color, since I have a high-end color inkjet, but it might be worthwhile if it's not too expensive. I expect it will face a fairly light duty cycle, so the things I care about are longevity and availability of supplies down the road. I don't want an all-in-one, or something that does anything besides print.

I've had a Dell 3100cn color laser for quite a few years now. Its only major disadvantage is that it's large and heavy. But it's lightning fast, very crisp, network-capable, and reluctant to jam or break. The cartridges are pricey but they last a long time. I'd heartily recommend it.

Frys should have a fair selection of basic monochrome lasers. I picked up one for my second job boss - samsung black/white laser printer w/wireless capability (another model is basic wired lan) for $150.

My young man just bought me a color Samsung wireless printer. It was a present so I don't know the exact price, but it was on the order of $200.

Fich recommended the Konica Minolta magicolor line to me years ago and we've had ours for close to five years now. It got me through tons of papers at Berkeley including my thesis and I've only needed to replace the black ink once. It's very reliable. So I can recommend the brand and that line of printer.

A year or two back I finally got fed up with inkjets and picked up a Lexmark c500n. I don't print a lot, so that makes this a fairly weak recommendation, but I'm happy with it so far FWIW.
