Subject:Earworms, horror, and music
Time:11:01 pm
A while ago, Tom and I got into a discussion about bad music. As often happens, a bit of a rivalry developed, and then a bet was made... you know how these things go. The bet was on which one of us could come up with the best list of the ten worst pop songs. We came up with terms of the bet and a judging system, and then waited (and waited and waited) while our judges rated the songs. One judge got fired and replaced. Finally, the results are in! That means that we can share this list with the world.

The instructions to the judges were as follow:
Here is a list of 20 songs, ten from each of us. We've provided YouTube links for your memory-jogging convenience. Please rate each song on a scale of -10 to 10, where -10 is the worst thing you've ever subjected your ears to, and 10 is as good as Bohemian Rhapsody. Use your own definitions of good and bad, but please consider music, lyrics, and that intagible quality of awfulness. The videos are provided simply so you have an easy way to hear the music, so please don't factor the quality of the video into your decisions.
All of the links should go to YouTube videos, though there's a risk that any of them could get taken down at a moment's notice. If that happens, leave a comment and I'll find a new link.

In a few days I'll reveal the results of the original bet, along with the color commentary from the judging panel. Anyone can vote, so long as they have a LiveJournal account.

Enjoy!

And what if we didn't think Bohemian Rhapsody was a particularly good song?

Seems like nothing on that list ranks worse than -3 or so, in any universe that contains "Bitches Ain't Shit" and "If I Had a Boat" and anything ever made by America or the Bloodhound Gang.

I suspect it may be a generational thing. The dreck that got played to death while you were growing up is the stuff that sticks with you as horrid.

This list is mostly cheesy, boring pop music.

But was it really *bad* music? How about:

Macarena by Los De Rio
Barbie Girl by Aqua
Rico Sauve by Gerado
Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) by C+C Music Factory
Mmm Bop by Hanson

Tainted Love by Soft Cell is at the top of my list for songs I would like to un-hear. That one and Voices Carry by Til Tuesday. Nails on a chalkboard. Ugh.

Wind Beneath My Wings is a song I am originally familiar with as being sung by Bette Midler. Am I rating this one as sung by Celine, rating only the song and its lyrics or... help? Thx

No Air Supply between the two of you? Or ABBA? Or Paula Abdul? Did I ever tell you, you're my hero? 99 Luft Balloons? Theme to Arthur? I wear my sunglasses at night? We built this city on rock & roll? I need a new drug? Hammer time! Wild thing! My Prerogative!

I really don't see how it's possible to choose just 10. 1

1 I actually like some of the ones I've mentioned, as well as some of the ones you've got on your list. Just 'cause I like it don't mean it's good. Hey, that should be a song title.

Seasons in the Sun canceled out.

The rule was that we each submitted ten songs to a third party. That person collated the lists and told us if we had any overlaps. If we did, we each submitted a different song. Seasons in the Sun was the one overlap.

This enjoyable medley by 80s punk band The Circle Jerks includes the following, with two of Patti's list:

1. Along Comes Mary-The Association
2. Close to You-The Carpenters
3. Afternoon Delight-Starland Vocal Band
4. Having My Baby-Paul Anka
5. Love Will Keep Us Together-Captain & Tennille
6. D.I.V.O.R.C.E.-Tammy Wynette

But my 2 year old thinks it is the best song ever! (Said with intentional sarcasm as to the level of musical quality enjoyed by toddlers.)

I'm curious - how do Johnny Horton and The McGuire Sisters count as "
pop"? 'Cause if they count, then there's buckets and buckets of songs that have to be considered.

The qualification was that either the song or the album had to have been on a top 100 chart.

a couple of these have 'cheeze' appeal for me (particularly mickey, ring my bell, and never been to me. the last i only know from priscilla queen of the desert soundtrack). i don't recall hearing "johnny freedom" before, and man that's atrocious. and my memories of "you light up my life" are colored by memories of reworking the lyrics to be "you light up my joint" with some friends at the time, so i smile too much at the thought to hate the song too hard.

I totally agree re: "Never Been to Me." Regardless of its cheesiness, I just can't undue its association with Priscilla.

Three points: Mickey is stupid and silly and not well done musically, but it is fun. I got up and danced vigorously with Shanna and I haven't done that in like six months. So I gave it a high rating. :)

And for Wind Beneath My Wings--I strongly dislike the Celine Dion version, I think her voice is just wrong for the song but I really love the Bette Midler version. It is tied to a sensitive part of my childhood.

And I grew up on Johnny Horton. You just can't get me to be too harsh on him. :)

ETA: Noah says that Staying Alive is the worst song ever in history so he's sad it isn't on the list.

I actively like several of the songs. Of course, I actively like Seasons In The Sun, too, so perhaps my taste is suspect.

I am not sure I would call your taste suspect. I like Metalica and Tool but I grew up with most of the songs listed here and like a number of them to some degree as well.

I think a list of one hit wonders would be cool as well like "life in a northern town" by Dream Academy. ok........I am perhaps weird beyond belief.

Unfortunate unintended consequence of your post:

I'm currently writing a puzzle based on song lyrics. It needs to be a fairly easy puzzle (part of a puzzle hunt that is supposed to take 2.5 hours for a group of mostly non-puzzlers), so I need to choose songs that a lot of people know the lyrics to.

So now these songs are in my head, and since a lot of them are earwormy, they are songs that a lot of people will know the lyrics of, so I'll end up using several of them.

So your "worst songs ever" will now be inflicted on a hundred or so innocent people.

Fascinating exercise; there does seem to be an extent to which you have to play to what you perceive to be the taste of the people you expect to vote. I could put together a ten against which I'd give (almost insultingly) low-stakes action if the poll were held on my journal, but some of the scoring here seems so strange to me that I wouldn't fancy betting either way if the audience were US-based.

When I read the subject, I said to myself "If Starland Vocal Band isn't in this list somewhere, it invalidates the whole damn thing." Glad to see it was among the first few songs in the poll!

Just have to say a couple of things.

1. I personally love several of the songs from my list, which does not in any way render them above awful.

2. The VERY real challenge for me was coming up with ONLY 10 songs.
