A few months ago I was thinking about Folsom Street Fair, and trying to find a relatively unique way to tell the stories of the fair in photos. I hit upon the idea of doing it from ground level and trying to tell stories using the footwear that went by.

I've only started looking through the images, but I knew when I shot it that this one would be one of my favorites. A slim, older transvestite dressed in all black stopped right in front of my lens as she slipped off a shoe to rest her feet. I snapped the picture quickly, and prayed to the photo gods that it would turn out OK.

I think this kind of closely cropped composition can be hugely effective - this one tells a rather charming little story all on its own. A small set (4? 6? 9?) of similarly tight shots would probably be effective because they're obviously so easy to get (hah! ;-))

Strangely enough, I'd have loved to have been able to take a fishnet picture myself this morning: a girl walked past me on London Bridge wearing jeans all "designerly" ripped across the knee, allowing the display of patterned fishnets. It's probably a common look in the right places, but I clearly don't go there and the contrast was new to me.
