I have lost my mind. I bought a Holga today. For those who don't know, a Holga is a cheap, crappy plastic camera that's made in China and is legendary for having horrible optics, minimal features, and light leaks. It shoots medium-format film, which is one of the reasons that I bought it. I've been lusting after something medium-format for a while, and now that I can develop my own film the lust was getting stronger.

Of course, me being me means that I dropped extra coin and got the one with all the bells and whistles. How much extra coin? The camera was $45, compared to cheaping out for the low $30s. (Cue "Hey Big Spender".)

All the bells and whistles means it has a built in flash, and the flash has a color wheel that lets you tint the light red, green, or blue. It also has bulb mode, a tripod mount, allows me to switch the aperture from f/8 to f/11 (yes, the sunny/cloudy switch actually works), and has a fixed shutter speed of 1/100sec when it's not in bulb mode. I have my choice of shooting 6x6 square or 6x4.5 rectangular format. (Those numbers are centimeters.) Square gets me 12 exposures per roll, and rectangular gets me 16.

Oh, the flash? It uses two AA batteries, but you can only replace them when there's no film in the camera.

So really, Patti... you have tens of thousands of dollars of professional camera equipment, and now you're shooting with a cheap toy? Crazy!

I came home through the Alameda Naval Air Station and shot a couple rolls of random stuff. I may have to go to the darkroom tomorrow...

Sigh. I may actually have a holga in my closet that I would have given you for free.

Thanks, but you should go shoot with it. Besides, instant gratification takes too long for me.

I burned through 3 rolls of B&W, but it is expensive, I have no training, and no innate skill, so I lost interest. That was about 10 years ago.

Well, have fun with it!

I generally dislike that particular thread of modern photography, but every now and then people even produce a photo I like with that kind of equipment.

And I've heard a rumor it's not all about me anyway.
