I looked myself up on Spokeo.com tonight.

"Patti Beadles" gives an address that's over a decade old. Patricia Beadles gets my correct address, says I'm married, has my cell phone number, and claims that I live in an apartment. It lists the value of the property at about $100K low.

It says I've lived here for seven years (wrong), and that there are two parents both unknown and one child (me) living here. WAY wrong. I may or may not opt out per the BoingBoing article, but I probably don't care enough.

If they pull data from public sources, they're doing a crappy job of it. It lists my address from 2 addresses ago -- in the wrong county. My wife, it lists her address correctly, but thinks she's single and says she's been living here for 2 years (we bought this house in April).

Boing Boing's just getting around to it, eh? I wrote an article on it almost a year ago. http://www.daniweb.com/news/story271760.html

Snopes says the opt-out procedure apparently doesn't work, and may simply be a mechanism to collect email addresses.

Interesting. I recall opting out a few months ago, so I went back and looked to see if I was there. My home address was not there, nor was my primary email, which implies that they honored by request because that information is easily available out on the Internet. However, my mailbox mailing address is there and they have my age correct but everything else is wrong. But snopes's point is taken, the info is out there and spokeo or others may say they will opt you out but they'll probably still have some information on you.

They got my address right and how long I've been living there. They don't know that my wife lives there. They think that I am 70+ years old. They are probably using the same source as the AARP and the Neptune society.

My info there is pretty thoroughly bogus, and so is the info for quite a few other people I checked.

I think we need a clearer statutory (or constitutional) basis for personal privacy. I'm not really sure exactly what it should be, though, and that sort of big change comes about when people agree.

Very frequently, I think the people who choose to hide are making the wrong long-term choice (I'm not including people with active stalkers or other immediate threats). Hiding is, I'm fairly sure, only a short-term solution. It's tactically useful, but by no means the full answer, and I think many people over-estimate the safety it buys them (even before things like Spokeo started trolling the online databases and trying to connect things). However, within the law, people get to make their own choices.

Taking the lid off and declaring that we're going to define what your legal rights to privacy are is kind of scary (though it holds out the possibility of considerably MORE legally protected privacy than we have now in the USA).

Yeah, all the people I've looked up so far have ludicrously incorrect results. My uncle is living in a three-person household with [wife's name] and [wife's name without middle initial]. My family (me and two unknown parents) have lived at my 8-year-old address for four years. My mother is married (yes), living in a house (yes), and interested in reading and sports (whaaa?), or perhaps she's single and living in a $1.6M retail property (the Mailboxes Etc containing her PO Box), depending on which record you look up.

Let's just say my name provides a certain amount of anonymity. There are 500+ people with name in colorado. I was listed, but had to drill until I found my address. Not surprisingly, it knew a few things at that point, but once you buy a house there is a lot of info in public records.
