Is anyone sufficiently well-versed in the process of font creation and editing to be able to offer me some guidance?

I'm thinking about using one of those services that turn your handwriting into a font, but I suspect I'm not going to be 100% satisfied with the results, and I'll want to do some editing on the results.

The usenet newsgroup comp.fonts is a great place to ask, both about font editing software packages and about how easy they are to use. And to get suggestions for which service to use to turn your handwriting into a font to start.

Microsoft have a free MyFont "power toy" (download link, created for "Tablet edition" Windows, that does something like you're describing. You'd need pen input of some kind though (the smaller Wacoms are cheap and good in my experience).

You might find that a useful link; it's free to use.

Sadly, it's no longer free.
