Subject:Please check my handwriting
Time:11:24 pm
After working on this for several hours last night, I essentially spent ALL DAY TODAY hand-editing and re-editing every single character in this character set. I've learned quite a lot about the process of font creation, to be sure, and it's forced me to learn some useful important Photoshop keyboard short cuts, but man this has been an insane amount of work.

I can't look at it any more... I need extra eyes. Does anything look horrible in this? Do you find it readable? It's my handwriting, so it's going to be messy and sloppy, but it should be legible and not hurt your eyes. The letter spacing should be sane, and it should all kind of vaguely line up on the baseline.

To give you an idea of how far I've come, this is where it was last night when I went to bed, and this is where it started out.

Nope. Trust me, it's one of the sentences I've typed today. I wanted all of the caps in words, though, and this was the easiest way to get that.

Hmm. Perhaps create some kerning hints for the uppercase V and T, and possibly for the lowercase j?

Other than that, it looks pretty darned good, and is a lot more readable than my handwriting is.

Oh, and you might want to make the upper circle in your percent sign be more circly. But maybe not.

I'm not sure I can create kerning hints using the online font creator that I'm using. A good deal of the work that I did today was to reshape letters to avoid some of the worst kerning problems. T and J have already been reshaped. V didn't draw my attention, but I kinda see it now. Actually, X is worse than V.

The percent sign has been made more circly. Good catch, thanks!

And my actual handwriting is not legible. That's why I'm working so hard to create a font... I have a couple dozen photos to letter before I'm done, and there's no way I'd be able to pull that off by hand. My goal is to create something that looks like what I could possibly produce for a few words if I wrote slowly and carefully.

My third grade teacher would be seriously displeased by your actual handwriting. (Of course, she told my mother that given the chicken-scratch quality of my own handwriting, I'd have little choice but to become a doctor. Look at how that turned out.)

Ah, that's too bad. The lowercase j, for instance, would look rather nice snugged under preceding letters.

Another possibility is that the open parenthesis is a bit too C-like in shape in comparison to the close parenthesis.

Your actual handwriting is so-so. I've written worse.

Nice. The ampersand looks a little low.

Yeah, it is a little slimy and underhanded.

I moved it up a hair, and also lowered/stretched the dollar sign while I was in there.

Overall, it looks really good! But since you did ask for feedback, here are some things to consider.

The Y is too closed at the top, and the right side ascender doesn't go all the way to the top. I like the shape and relative ascender evenness of your lower case y much better, it looks much more y-ier than the Y does.

The splat (*, aka asterisk) could stand to be a bit more precise (e.g. slightly longer edges of each line on the upper-left side of the intersection).

Close parens is too pointy, looks too much like an angle bracket.

Your 1 (number 1) and l (lower case L) are very similar. I don't have any suggestions about how to fix this, but wanted to draw your attention to it. If it wasn't supposed to be "your" hand writing, I'd suggest adding a serif to the 1 (one).

The l (lower case L) might could use a tad more space on the left side. Look at how crowded it gets in Alpha, Golf, Juliet, and Kilo.

The 6 looks like it's falling over. I'd redraw so the top starts closer to the right side the space.

I'd like to see some tables of numbers (like you have your Alpha Bravo list) to get a better sense if they all work well together with each other. I'm assuming that you will be using this font to title and sign your prints, or to make labels. Check how 2001 - 2009 and 2010, 2011, 2012, etc., look, as well as prices.

Thanks!

The asterisk is totally *not* going to change. That's exactly what mine look like. On a good day.
