I want to:

- Go to Venice before it sinks
- Go back to Moscow
- Go back to St. Louis and find my dad's grave, now that I know where it is
- Go to a taping of Top Gear in the UK
- Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef again
- See the northern lights
- Go on a cruise
- Do a long road trip around the US

When you get to Venice, let me know. I know all kinds of great off the beat places there. A semester is a long enough time to find all kinds of great places.

I think you are making excuses. With a little planning and forethought, you can cover the domestic ones fairly easily. As for the foreign trips...Why not substitute one of them instead of your London Thanksgiving excursion?

Mm, Venice is beautiful. I'd love to be able to go back and see more of it.

- Go to Venice before it sinks

I read that as "Go to Venice before it stinks" and my first thought was, it already does, doesn't it? lol. Is it actually sinking? I always just figured they had piers down to bedrock holding everything up.

It's sinking, but not stinking. At least not on the days I was there.

But going to Venice before it sinks will almost force you to go to Pisa before their tower topples over. And while you are there, they have plenty of places to visit in northern Italy anyway. And wine to taste. And Grappa.

I've only done the last 3, but I like your list. That said, a cruise was nowhere near as good as the other two. I get to see the northern lights about once a week during winter and I still love them.

Venice was kinda meh for me. Lots of other places in Italy that are way more interesting. Two days was more than enough to feel like I saw all I wanted/needed to. I highly recommend the Lake Como region for beauty and Rome for history. I've done two separate 5 day trips to Rome and still want to go back and see more more more.

LMK about Top Gear if you do want to do that, I might be able to help.

Northern Lights is on my list as well.

Cruise is going to be VERY dependent on what you are looking for. I've been on a couple, mostly as a kid, one more recently. They are fun (especially a Greek Isles one) but most of them do not overnight in port which means you don't get to see any of the local nightlife, which I find to be a real bummer.

As one of my trips for the year, it was between going on a cruise again or going back to an amazing all-inclusive in Jamaica. I chose Jamaica. Cost was about the same.

I've done the road trip in the US before. Very interesting and a great way to see the country. Maybe combine it with a poker room trip like Tiger did years ago?

Most of these sound awesome to me... but I can't really see you enjoying a cruise much, at least not any of the ones I've been on. Cruises are sort of a lowest-common-denominator vacation, great for families or mixed groups because there's a bit of something for everyone, but the flip side of that is that there's not much of anything for anyone. (NB: I don't know if this applies to eco-cruises or small-ship cruises, which I gather are fairly different in flavor and tone; I'm talking about the major cruise lines here.)
