3:15 a.m. I'm awakened by the doomsday trumpet that is our building's fire alarm. It won't shut up, so I crawl out of bed, pull some clothes on, stumble around until I find my keys, and head for the front door. I think I vaguely smell smoke outside the door of my unit, but it could just be stale cigarette smoke.

Just as my foot touches the bottom stair on the first floor, the alarm shuts off. Lovely. I exchange a few groggy words with a couple of the neighbors, and go back inside.

And now I can't get back to sleep. The only saving grace is that I've made about $200 playing poker online while curled up in bed waiting for the sandman to come back.

In other news, I got a shiny new stove and dishwasher today. The dishwasher is delightfully quiet, and has the amazing property of actually getting dishes clean, rather than just moving food bits randomly from one plate to another.

The range's sole purpose in life is to force you to make decisions. It has a regular oven, a convection oven, a broiler, and a warming drawer. And heaven forbid you want to cook something; you'll have to choose between the 5000 BTU simmer burner, the 9500 BTU normal burner, the 12000 BTU high-power burner, and the 14000 BTU high-power burner. However, thus far none of them have exhibited the behavior of the predecessor, which is to let the burners go out every five minutes if you're using a setting below about 75% power.

A week from right now, I'll be on a plane headed for Australia.
