My current vehicle is a mid-80s BMW 3-series with over a quarter million miles. It's a perfectly servicable car, and it's been very good to me for the last nine years, but it's starting to show its age. I started surfing around on Friday afternoon just to see how much an old Mercedes convertible would cost, and it's about what I thought.
When I came out of the office Friday evening, I had a flat tire. It was just a standard issue piece-of-metal-in-the-tread thing... annoying but no big deal. Up on the jack, put the spare on, and away I go. I think the car knew I was shopping.
Friday night I started surfing around, not really planning to buy, but curious to see what was out there. I was fully convinced that I had no good reason to buy a new car, since mine was running just fine. Somewhere in the last 48 hours, I've gone from just curious to seriously shopping... I don't know when or how the bit got flipped, but I've pretty much decided to buy.
My current candidate vehicles are either a mid-80s Mercedes SL-series convertible, or an early-to-mid-90s BMW 3-series convertible. I'm thinking of this as my midlife crisis car.
