Extreme Makeover

The show Extreme Makeover was on TV while I was getting my nails done last night. I don't watch TV at all, really, and haven't in two decades, so I'm not really attuned to the whole reality show thing.

I have to say, though, that I was completely appalled by the whole concept of this show. I can grok makeovers at a certain level... people want to look better, to find a new style, to improve their lives, to be someone else... I can buy into all of that.

If I stretch, I can even imagine why someone might want plastic surgery, even though I can't see myself doing it. I've known people who had a pretty decent self-image, but really hated the way their ears stuck out, or thought their nose didn't fit their face, etc.

I just don't get the whole knife-heavy makeover concept, though. Why would people put themselves through that? What are they trying to accomplish? How bad would you have to feel about yourself in order to make it worth having that much plastic surgery?

And what does this say about our society?
