What is it about karaoke?

Tonight was the company holiday party, which was held at the CEO's house. He has an amazingly nice place in the upper Haight, and the company is just the right size to fit a good party in there.

At some point, a couple of people went downstairs and started fooling around with the karaoke machine. And then the next thing I knew, the whole party was downstairs and singing. And singing. And singing. One guy in the group was very good, another was moderately competent, and the rest ranged from mediocre to abysmal. (I think I set the floor, but one guy would strongly argue that he was worse. We did King of Pain as a duet.)

What is it about karaoke that draws people? Once we started, we just couldn't stop!

I need someone who knows about video

I bought a line doubler for my video system (which uses a CRT projector as a display), and the doubler seems to be clipping the brightness something fierce. If I feed DVD or the Tivo signal directly into the projector, I get lots of brightness, but if I feed it through the line doubler, it's truly craptacular.

Any idea what's up?
