Gmail - argh!

I have a mailing list archive on Gmail. I want to find out two simple pieces of data by searching the mail: how many messages were posted with a specific subject line, and how many messages did one specific individual post using that subject line.

As far as I can tell, the first piece of information is achievable if I'm willing to do some manual work to sum up the counts from multiple lines of search results-- although I'm not 100% certain that there are no duplications in the "conversations." The second seems impossible, though-- it wants to return all the discussion that the individual has been a part of, rather than the individual messages.

This is insane!
