The Oakland mayor's race was interesting this year. There were three major candidates-- Don Perata, Jean Quan, and Rebecca Kaplan, plus several minor candidates. In terms of the popular vote, the three finished in that order.
However, none of them got a majority, and Oakland uses ranked choice voting. As the second place votes were reassigned, Jean Quan became the winner. Vote counts are here. I suspect this was because a fairly strong anyone-but-Perata sentiment that was fed by Ms. Quan and Ms. Kaplan.
I'm not sure how I feel about RCV, but this was certainly an interesting result.
