Positively Fifth Street by James McManus
Jim gets sent to Vegas by Harpers to do two stories-- one on women in poker, and one on the murder of Ted Binion.
He uses his advance to buy into a single-table satellite for the $10K event at the World Series of poker, and wins a seat. Not only does he play in the main event, he makes the final table!
The book wanders through many topics, including the Binions family, poker in general, strip clubs, Ted's murder, and what it's like to play in the main event of the WSOP. He even touches on such esoteric subjects as the history of playing cards.
I missed a WSOP event that I had intented to play, simply because I stayed up all night reading this book. It's just incredible. I'm also astounded that a book on poker has an Amazon sales rank of #15, and is on the NYT bestseller list.
