When I shut the backgammon server down, the loft was overcome with a most blissful silence. The server is a big honkin' box with redundant power supplies, multiple CPUs, and what was a killer RAID array when I bought it. And many loud, obnoxious fans.
I want to make it quieter. For a variety of reasons, replacing the box isn't a viable option. Moving it out of the main room isn't completely impossible, but close enough. I'm pretty sure that the right idea is to build an enclosure of some sort.
I'm thinking a big wooden box with noise-dampening foam on the inside and several very quiet fans to maintain cooling. Thoughts?
