Subject:I'm insane!

I've lost my bloody mind, I think. I have an art show this weekend in Portland, and I screwed around so long that airfares are ridiculous. I'm very seriously considering hopping in the car and driving to Portland and back this weekend. Someone please talk me out of this!

Flying would probably be much easier. You could be sure that you'd be here, with time to relax & set up before the show.
On the other hand, you are in SF, right? It's not such a horrible drive.

Setting up the show is Not My Problem, and will happen whether I attend or not. Flying is like $450+ round-trip.

And gas would be, what, $150? Also, how much is your time worth?

Can't talk you out of it, but you're welcome to crash here along the way.

Another possibility: Allegiant Air flies OAK <--> EUG for $278 this weekend. Come here, use us as a home base, and rent a car to get to Portland. (Added temptation: Eugene Pride is Saturday!)

Thanks! The Allegiant flights are at completely the wrong times, unfortunately. If I do drive up,, I may stop in Eugene along the way.

You should drive. And take the 101. I mean that is seriously some of the prettiest scenery your country has to offer.

Could you Amtrak? It would take about the same as driving but you won't arrive exhausted.

Already looked-- it takes about twice as long, and isn't all that cheap.

I hate flying just as much. But I would do it anyways just to save time. Have a few cocktails at the airport and bring the laptop and play some poker. That seems to help me pass the time and the agony.

Not to mention the poker could pay for the flight :-)

BTW Bill mentioned he was going to Portland this month for a conference - not sure if your dates are overlapping but you should double check.

Regarding flying vs driving, didn't you semi-spontaneously fly to London to see a play? Surely that was more than $450. Do you really want to spend 10 hours each way driving?

If you don't have another driver, I don't recommend taking the car up. You'll be tired and won't enjoy much the day you get here. The drive back will do another number on you.

Splurge and take a flight.

You are worth it.

We just did the drive, and it was beautiful (we took 101). We did stay in Eugene overnight, because I wanted to visit it, but we didn't have to. It's not a stressful drive at all.

I am highly amused at all the people who are so willing to spend your money on that flight. :) $450 tho... that's pretty insane. Have you tried priceline or kayak.com?

Yes, of course. It's because it's last-minute.
