Subject:BART strike?
Time:11:50 pm
As you've probably heard if you live in the San Francisco bay area, Bay Area Rapid Transit workers are planning to go on strike after the last train gets to its destination Sunday night. If you don't live in the area, you may or may not know that BART is a major light rail system that connects a lot of the bay area, and carries about 340K riders per day. Of course, there is furious closed-door negotiation going on, since a strike would be a serious disruption.

Poll #1444129 BART Strike

What do you think the chances are of BART workers striking Sunday night?

What's the big beef that they are going to strike over? Money, benefits, pensions?

7% pay cut.

Not exactly.

The imposed contract terms are somewhat harsher than those in the settlement, requiring ATU members to pay 7 percent of their salaries toward their state CalPERS pensions. The settlement had BART picking up that cost.

As I understand it, they could have opted for the settlement, which would have contained a 4-year freeze on salaries instead
of the above. When the failed to ratify the settlement, BART officials imposed a 1-year contract with the above provision.

Two other BART unions approved the settlement.

I find it hard to believe that there would be much public sympathy for
a strike given the recession, so I don't think there's a high
likelihood that they would risk a strike.

OTOH, they might not give a FF what the public thinks.

There best strategy would seem to be to go for what they can get in a short-term contract and then push for more concessions in a couple years
when the economy is likely to be doing better.

I know I am against the strike. I am out of work and I would be darned happy to have their cush jobs. I believe they have no public sympathy in my social circle.

The striking workers don't care about the public. They have managed to bargain for outrageous salaries over the years and are fighting to maintain these salaries. Even if they were fighting to get a contract with "only a 7% pay reduction" (if, for instance, the company wanted a much greater reduction) they wouldn't have any public sympathy. The public sentiment is that BART employees are grossly overpaid and should be fired, and the jobs opened up to new workers at the current fair market rate for these general job skills.

If they go on strike I wouldn't be at all surprised if there's a long line of people standing in front of the striking workers holding their resumes and carrying signs saying "Hire me, I'll take the offered contract!".

The line I offered wild_irises yesterday was "somewhere between 20 and 50 to 1 in favor of a strike happening." With reasonable margin of safety I think I would lay odds of 10:1 in favor and take odds of 100:1.

I didn't see this in time to take the poll, but I was going to counter abostick59 was more like 3:1. I can't see the poll results because I didn't respond, but I'm curious about what they were.
