Someone on my backgammon server just shouted this:
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year-old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Thanks. I figured it came from somewhere, but hadn't bothered to look it up yet.

Tee hee. My life's story (the socially crippled adulthood part), even if the punchline was eminently predictable and therefore cruise-ship-comedian lame. But really, how many people have read Atlas Shrugged at 14?

I think all my friends in school had read it by freshman year of high school. Not that I had tons of friends, nor were they very mainstream. But we all were avid readers of anything that came along.

As I said to Omaha, "Y'know, even in my emotionally stunted adulthood I can still take a joke, but... I've never read Atlas Shrugged."

On the other hand, I would put Illuminatus! as such a book as well.

...leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood...
Nah. People's emotional makeup and M.O. for dealing—or not dealing—with other people are well-established by 14.

I read Atlas Shrugged when I was 13. I was already emotionally stunted and socially crippled.
