Me is the objective case. So if the I/me refers to an object (a direct object, indirect object, or object of a preposition), then it's "me."

I is the subjective case. So if I/me refers to a subject (the subject of a clause or a predicate nominative), then it's "I."

Language isn't what speakers make it! It was frozen in time when I learned the rules of grammar, and that's that.
