Allow me to rant

In case you've been under a rock recently, yesterday Janet Jackson wound up with a bare breast during the superbowl halftime show. It's not at all clear whether it was an accident or an intentional move, but my best guess is that the red fabric underneath was supposed to stay on, and that it really was, as they claimed, a costume malfunction.

OK, fine. I don't really care. That's not why I'm interested, although I did have some fun today explaining to my coworkers exactly how a nipple shield works.

What boggles my mind is how outraged people are feeling over this. It's a human breast, for crying out loud. Each and every one of us is born with two of them, though they develop differently in half of the species. The whole incident lasted what, a couple of seconds? And the cameras cut away quickly?

Now we have an FCC investigation, NFL and network officials issuing statements like they're going out of business, and apologies from everyone involved. There's coast-to-coast watercooler gossip about the scandal, though most of the people talking have been secretly viewing it over and over on the internet.

Why does our culture consider the human body indecent, while utterly abhorrent violence is shown as though it was no big deal? I just don't understand.
