Thank you for your kind letter, which I received via post this evening. While I sincerely appreciate your reaching out to me in this way, I must regretfully decline your offer to extend my warranty for an additional three years beyond the original year that was included with the purchase of the computer. You see, I am good at both math and logic, and I recognize that spending $190 to extend the warranty on a machine that cost less than twice that sum is, in fact, an appallingly bad deal.

I don't even buy the extended AppleCare on macbooks, which is about 10% the price for the extra two years 'cos that's still a bad deal (unless you really can't afford to self-insure).

Yes, of course. And the most likely outcome in years 1-4 after purchase is that I will be able to buy a more-capable machine for the same price or less. After one year, an exact replacement would probably run me $250-300, and after four years an exact replacement (if I could find one) would be less than $100. However, odds of my wanting an exact replacement after more than a year are right around 0.
